=================
July 2007
Woods Charter School is eager to build the school it needs to add facilities to a successful educational program. As part of their community enrichment package, Briar Chapel's Newland Development Company donated a beautiful 18-acre site to the Woods Charter School. The site includes a creek as part of an untouched natural environment. An independent public school, Woods Charter School operates very much like a small business, finding smart solutions to fund programs and buildings. A majority of its annual funding is from local and state sources on a per student basis, but leaves little money after daily operating costs for a building or furnishings.
In September 2006, the Woods Charter School Board of Directors engaged Capital Development Services to help plan a Capital Campaign to raise the funds necessary to outfit the new building which will be privately funded with no additional tax burden to local residents.
The Woods Charter School Foundation was established in 2007 for the sole purpose of raising funds to outfit the new building and to enhance the school's educational goals. Its first project is to raise $1.5 million to equip the new school building, expected to open in August 2008.
The items to be purchased include:
Classroom furniture
Student Lockers
Computers for classroom use
Computer lab equipment
Science lab equipment
Music and art supplies
Physical Education equipment
Bleachers
Cafeteria and kitchen equipment
Telephones and PA system
Ethernet wiring throughout the building
Main server equipment
Conference room furniture
Exterior furniture
The Woods Charter School Foundation will be seeking donations from sources including the school community, educational and civic foundations and the business community. Many opportunities including sponsorship/naming are available.
In the next few months, the Capital Campaign Committee will be contacting members of the Woods Charter School Community to discuss opportunities for giving to this worthy cause, and to recruit more volunteers to help make this $1.5 million campaign successful.

October 2007
Greetings from the Woods Charter School Foundation Capital Campaign!
As of this week, our building is progressing nicely. The lack of rain has been a curse for our overall water supply, but a blessing in that we haven't had any rain delays with grading and foundation. Steel is being erected, and you can see photo updates on a regular basis on the website (http://www.woodscharter.org/mainlinks.php?id=211).
Please remember that the site is not open to visitors. We ask that you drive by to see the progress, but don't venture up onto the site during construction! Bobbitt asks that only authorized persons go up onto the site, even when nothing is going on up there, for our safety!!!!!
The Woods Charter School Foundation has started receiving pledges and donations from members of the Foundation and WCS Community, including teachers, parents, and grandparents. To date, we have over $122,000 in pledges and we are off to a great start in raising the funds we need to actually turn our new, wonderful building into a school!!!
In the coming days, more information will be delivered to the parent community about the Capital Campaign and ways to support Woods Charter School.
========================
November 2007
Have you looked at the path through Woods lately? Do you see the sparkling silver steel roof beaming through the trees? That's our school; Woods Charter School; Our School of Choice!
The building is progressing nicely! Please go to the website (http://www.woodscharter.org/mainlinks.php?table=main_nbp&id=218) and check out the new photos! The roof is in place, concrete is poured on the second floor, interior walls are going up, and the heating and air conditioning ducts are being installed. The exterior panels are being fabricated, will begin going up soon, and what a difference that will make!
Private financing for the construction of the building has been obtained, however we need to raise the funds to outfit our school. The school board has approved a $1.5 million Capital Campaign, run by the newly-formed Woods Charter School Foundation, to assist with securing the equipment and furnishings needed for the building. This includes such things as lockers, information technology/connectivity, science lab equipment, physical education equipment, kitchen needs, art supplies and music equipment.
For example, the required wiring to run our computer system could cost up to $500,000 and must be installed during construction for us to be able to use our school. Every opportunity to be thrifty and economical has been and will continue to be pursued by various planning committees. For instance, the school has just acquired, free of charge, 25 bookshelves, 25 storage cabinets, 30 desks, 20 cubicles, 20 file cabinets and more! (all like-new) from EPA.
We need to begin building the financial infrastructure needed to provide our children with the most enhanced state of the art learning environment. The Foundation can only do this with your help! Cash and pledges totaling $118,250 with an additional $40,000 coming our way via matched employer funds have already been donated.
We, the Woods Community, are direct benefactors of the school and need to send a strong message to the outside community by obtaining support internally. Our goal is to obtain 100% parent donor participation.
Once we solidify our internal commitment, the Woods Foundation can approach area philanthropists, local businesses, and other foundations to join in this educational investment. The most important criteria in determining if they will donate to a cause are whether the beneficiaries of the service are donating.
That is why it is very important that we have 100% PARENT PARTICIPATION.
The Foundation is accepting donations in several ways, including one-time payments and periodic contributions. If you would like donate monthly or quarterly, you can spread the gift up to three years. And don't forget to ask your employer about matching funds - as you can see, it makes a huge difference.
One fact to keep in mind is that our children are essentially receiving an education similar to what they would receive in a private school, which in our area costs approximately $10,000 - $12,000 per year. A problem Woods has had in recruiting students is some prospective parents just assumed that it was an expensive private school. (You will note that one of the first bullets on Wood's website is that it is a FREE public school!)
Based upon our current student population of 354 students (consisting of 250 families), if we raised $4,200 per student or $6,000 per family, we would reach our goal of $1.5 million. (A $4,200 donation spread over 3 years is only $116 per month). In addition, donations can be made via credit card if you are collecting points or rewards.
These are simply suggestions for you to consider. Again, our main goal is 100% participation and the Foundation knows and understands that the amount given, whether more or less, must be based upon each family's situation. All donations are held in the strictest confidence. Donations to the Capital Campaign will not only help outfit our new building, they are also tax-deductible.
In the near future, you will receive your capital campaign information, which includes a pledge card and an envelope to mail or deliver to Nicolle Stewart, our Capital Campaign Development Coordinator.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Nicolle at 919.960.8353 ext 106 or nstewart@woodscharter.org
Please join us in this significant time at Woods Charter School and pledge your financial support. Our children will be thankful.
Sincerely,
Mary Crabtree
Parent Gifts Chair

December 2007
Greetings from the Woods Charter School Foundation Capital Campaign!
What a difference a month makes! The visual impact of the building is changing daily as the exterior wall panels go up. Please check out our newest photos, not on the school website, but at http://www.wcsnewschool.shutterfly.com. The password for this album is wcssite. Thanks to John Perschy for taking pictures almost every day so that we have a record of the building!
Our Capital Campaign is in full swing now. To date, we have received $130,000 in donations and pledges and $42,500 in Corporate Matching Funds toward our goal of $1.5 million. Many Classroom Representatives have already contacted parents with information about how to donate to our Capital Campaign.
Whether you have your information packet or not, please take some time to think about what Woods Charter School means to your family. How has WCS enhanced the life of your child? How would life be different without WCS? Is there a particular teacher who has connected with your child in a way that you never expected?
Woods Charter School has a history rich with volunteerism; when something needs to be done, parents pull together and accomplish it in a manner that is referred to as "The Woods Way." Unfortunately, the Woods Way cannot work for everything. Woods Charter School administration works hard to maintain and even increase the high level of educational standards that were set up with the original charter nine years ago in spite of the minimal public funding received. This fiscal responsibility has allowed WCS to acquire funding to build the new building, but in the same way that a family purchases a house without furniture, so shall our building be purchased without enough furniture, etc. Our Capital Campaign will help to purchase some of the things that we desperately need to turn the building into a school.
Now is your chance to help in the dream, the quest to transform the building on the hill off Andrews Store Road into a full-fledged school! Please consider making your pledge soon as a commitment to Woods and the superior education that your child is receiving here. Remember that the Woods Community are direct benefactors of the school and need to send a strong message to the outside community by obtaining support internally. Our goal is to achieve 100% parent donor participation.
Your gift to the Capital Campaign is a thank you to those who have worked hard to bring us this far, and a promise to those who will come in the future. It demonstrates your confidence this public school of choice for your child's education. Your gift is a clear confirmation of your belief that Woods Charter School is successfully building a framework for success in life through education.

A New Year Greeting from the Woods Charter School Foundation
2007 was a busy and exciting year for the Woods Charter School community. In March, Woods was notified that the deed to the Briar Chapel property was filed with the Chatham County Register of Deeds and the Woods Charter School Foundation, Inc. was established. In the following months, plans for the new building were finalized and the School Board secured a bond for the funds needed to proceed. Bobbitt Design Build broke ground and construction of the WCS new building was under way. The Foundation Capital Campaign officially began and will continue through 2008, with the proceeds from this Campaign helping to outfit the new building. We thank you for your support this year and look forward to your help in the coming years with the effort to assist WCS in many ways.
Since Woods began in 1998, members of the Community had a dream of being able to have a home of our own and the hope of that home being a new building became part of the dreams. Whether we view the pictures on line or drive past the site, it is exciting to watch the progress of those hopes and dreams.
2008 should prove to be an even more exciting and busier year for the Woods Charter School Community as we go forward with the plans and work needed to make all the hopes and dreams a reality -- the reality that we will have our own home and it will indeed be a new building, the reality that we, the Woods Charter School community, can and will turn that building into a school. It will continue to be the school of our choice, the school in which we will continue to entrust our children and have the utmost of pride.
The Woods Charter School Foundation Board of Directors wishes the entire Woods Charter School community
a healthy, wonderful, exciting, busy, and fulfilling New Year.
Lil Orlandi, George Lucier, Donald Beeson, Cotton Bryan, Simon King,
and Nicolle Stewart, Development Coordinator

January 2008
Greetings from the Woods Charter School Foundation Capital Campaign!
Have you driven down Andrew's Store Road in the past week? All the exterior panels are up and the brickwork is nearly done. John Perschy is doing a great job keeping the photos up to date ( http://www.wcsnewschool.shutterfly.com : password = wcssite ) but it's even more amazing in person! Once the brickwork is done and the windows are installed, things on the outside won't change as quickly as they have since we first broke ground in July 2007. Please drive by and take a look, but remember that the site is a construction zone, off limits to us, and must be viewed from the road!
Over the past 8 months, the Steering Committee has been working hard to plan and execute the Capital Campaign and so far, we've been very successful! We have $191,000 in pledges and current year donations plus $24,640 in 2009 matched donations from faculty and staff, parents, and relatives of teachers and parents. While the total amount we raise is important, what is more important is that 100% of our Woods community contributes to our campaign. As we prepare to write grants proposals and reach out into the greater community for contributions, we want to be able to say with a strong voice that EVERYONE in our community is chipping in to turn our shell of a building into the school that we want.
Hopefully everyone has received a packet containing some information about our school and the campaign, along with that all important pledge card. (If you haven't yet received your information packet and pledge card, please contact Nicolle Stewart.) Before the holidays, I asked everyone to think about what Woods Charter School means to your family and how WCS has enhanced the life of your child. No dollar amount can be attached to the value of the education your children receive at WCS, but your gift to the Capital Campaign is a sign that you believe in this wonderful school of choice!
Please take a few moments this week to fill out that pledge card, and return it to Nicolle Stewart or, if you like, your room representative.
Your donation to the Capital Campaign is a way for you to join other Woods community members and take an active role to provide some of the contents that are necessary to open our new building. A donation is also a clear confirmation of your belief that Woods Charter School is successfully building a framework for success in your child's life through education.

February 2008
Greetings from the Woods Charter School Foundation Capital Campaign!
I never thought that a Capital Campaign would be so intricate or have so many people involved. Over the past year, the Foundation Board and Capital Campaign Steering Committee have worked hard learning about best ways to plan and execute the much needed Capital Campaign to raise money needed to outfit our new building.
Since I took on the job of Communications Chair, I've been asked one particular question, "Why do we need a Capital Campaign if we have a loan?" The answer to that is plain and simple! When I bought my house, I got a mortgage for the house, but not for the material things that make that house a home. My house didn't come with couches and chairs, pots and pans, or beds and dressers. Just like our new homes, our new building won't come fully equipped with desks, tables and chairs, playground equipment, or even library books!
I know that all the kids love the mismatched chairs and desks as much as they love the oddly shaped rooms and overall quirkiness of our current location. They love Mr. Wertz's fishbowl room. They love that you have to go through Ms. Soni's room to get to Ms Dorn's room and that the best way into the high school common area is through Mr. Temple's room. A couple years ago, School Board meetings were held in Mr. Temple's room and I used to love sitting in those turquoise chairs in the back of the room, wondering exactly where they'd come from, and dreaming of a time when everything in the school would be new and smell fresh. Hopefully the interesting patterns on the floor and the yellow walls with splashes of blue, green, and orange will make up for all the square rooms.
I can hardly wait until our upper grades can have a dance in their very own gym and not have to worry about renting a place big enough. It will be a pleasure to walk into the lobby and across the WCS logo in the floor to an auditorium set up for Café Night or a Great Room filled with art created by our children! Imagine the thrill of watching last month's Teachers vs. J.V. basketball game in our own gymnasium!
Our community has worked long and hard to get Woods to the place it is now. We are getting so close to finishing the building and turning it into a school, but we need help from every family. It only takes a few minutes to fill out that yellow pledge card and send it back to us. Your donation can be given by check, monthly bank draft, credit card (think of all those points!!), and it can be spread out over time.
Please join me and the other families who have already donated to the campaign. Your donation is a clear confirmation of your belief that Woods Charter School is successfully building a framework for success in your child's life through education.

Area Musicians to Perform at Fundraiser for Woods Charter School Foundation
Three groups of popular area musicians will perform in a Cat's Cradle benefit for the Music Department of The Woods Charter School Foundation on Friday, March 14th at 8:00 P.M. Hobex and Great Big Gone will be joined by Lynn Blakey and Ecki Heinz.
Hobex earned its reputation as a sparkplug of the southern soul revival, performing over 1000 shows since the mid-90s. They have shared the stage frequently with friends The North Mississippi Allstars and MOFRO, as well as musical legends Al Kooper, Bernie Worrell (Talking Heads, P- Funk), George Porter Jr. (The Meters), and Fred Wesley (James Brown, The JBs). Consisting of Triangle music veterans, Great Big Gone hails from the NC Piedmont and brews up a twangy blend of electrified porch picking, finger licking, roots rocking, western swinging, honky-tonking Americana all garnished with a pinch of Cajun. Lynn Blakey, a voice and songwriter you know from local Americana folk divas, Tres Chicas, performs solo with her fiddle playing husband Ecki Heins who adds colors and mirroring emotions to her rich and textured songwriting. Rootsy and down to earth, expect beautiful melodies and harmonies. Lynn and Ecki sing and play together as only newlyweds can.
The Woods Charter School in Northern Chatham County is a grade 1 through 12 public school, founded by parents. It is tuition free, open to all students and fosters a vibrant love of learning and academic excellence. The school ranks sixth in NC for SAT scores and is currently awaiting the August completion of a new fully equipped building. Funds raised will be designated for the Music Department. For further information see the school's website at www.woodscharter.org. Tickets are $10.00 and are available at www.catscradle.com. For more information call 919-260-0661 or email musical_roots@bellsouth.net
The benefit has been organized by Gerry Williams and Janet Place, parents of 3rd grader, Cam Williams. Janet is also the lead singer of Great Big Gone, one of the three bands performing.
The March 14th benefit is a kid- friendly performance with an early start-time of 8:00 PM and free admission for all kids under 12. The Cat's Cradle is smoke- free establishment and had been for a number of years.

April 2008
The end of a school year always makes me contemplative. This year, I've been thinking about how wonderful our new building will be and how hard people have been working to get us there. The building committee has worked tirelessly to make sure that things are completed in August. The Foundation has been working diligently to raise money to help outfit the new building. About 35% of our community has already pledged support in the amount of $255,000 to the Capital Campaign, but we still need to have the support of the other 65%!
There are still so many things needed to help turn that bright new building on the hill into a school, but if every one of us chips in, the need would be a lot less. In addition, we would become known as the little school that did--the Woods Charter School Foundation Capital Campaign will be the most successful capital campaign in the history of charter schools! Much like the story that follows, if we all give what we can, a carrot here, a potato there, our school opening can be successful beyond our dreams.
=========================
A kindly, old stranger was walking through the land when he came upon a village. As he entered, the villagers moved towards their homes locking doors and windows.
The stranger smiled and asked, why are you all so frightened. I am a simple traveler, looking for a soft place to stay for the night and a warm place for a meal.
"There's not a bite to eat in the whole province," he was told. "We are weak and our children are starving. Better keep moving on."
"Oh, I have everything I need," he said. "In fact, I was thinking of making some stone soup to share with all of you." He pulled an iron cauldron from his cloak, filled it with water, and began to build a fire under it.
Then, with great ceremony, he drew an ordinary-looking stone from a silken bag and dropped it into the water.
By now, hearing the rumor of food, most of the villagers had come out of their homes or watched from their windows. As the stranger sniffed the "broth" and licked his lips in anticipation, hunger began to overcome their fear.
"Ahh," the stranger said to himself rather loudly, "I do like a tasty stone soup. Of course, stone soup with cabbage -- that's hard to beat."
Soon a villager approached hesitantly, holding a small cabbage he'd retrieved from its hiding place, and added it to the pot.
"Wonderful!!" cried the stranger. "You know, I once had stone soup with cabbage and a bit of salt beef as well, and it was fit for a king."
The village butcher managed to find some salt beef . . . and so it went, through potatoes, onions, carrots, mushrooms, and so on, until there was indeed a delicious meal for everyone in the village to share.
The villager elder offered the stranger a great deal of money for the "magic" stone, but he refused to sell it and traveled on the next day.
As he left, the stranger came upon a group of village children standing near the road. He gave the silken bag containing the stone to the youngest child, whispering to a group, "It was not the stone, but the villagers that had performed the magic."

May 2008
Dear Woods Parents,
I wanted to provide everyone with a brief update of parent contributions to the Woods Charter School Foundation. We currently have received contributions from 35% of the parent population. Though this is a great start, we still need to increase this percentage.
Understanding each of us contributes in many ways to Woods, I ask that you make at least a nominal donation to the Foundation if you haven't already done so.
Construction of the new school has been going extremely well.
Let's make the push to outfit the building go just as well. Please pledge your support by contacting Nicolle Stewart at nstewart@woodscharter.org or 960-8353 x 106.
Thanks,
Mary Crabtree

September 2008 Update
Welcome to a new year at Woods Charter School and our first year in a permanent home! Welcome also to our new families.... You've joined us at such an exciting time! Hopefully everyone is settled in and I know that our Elementary teachers are happy that they won't have to pack up and move ever AGAIN.
Some teachers I've talked with didn't remember if their teaching wall is blue or green, they are so excited that their classroom is yellow! (Mr. Temple's aqua chairs fit in nicely with the yellow walls, don't they?) I hear that the kids like having their very own lockers and the bells that ring at change of classes. They like the orange walls in the bathroom and the circles and triangles scattered on the floor.
Last year, the Woods Charter School Foundation was established to provide funding and other means of support to enhance the mission of Woods Charter School. The initial Capital Campaign was hugely successful; our Founding Donors contributed more than $331,000 in donations and pledges. Our recently published 2007-2008 Annual Report details everything that the community enabled Woods Charter School to purchase. Please click here to view.
The Foundation will continue to fund raise through parent and community donations and grant applications in order to improve the total Woods experience with particular interest in the arts, the library / media center, science, and technology and math.
Warm Regards,
Carmen

October 2008 Communication
Greetings from The Woods Charter School Foundation! With the school year well under way, it's time to start thinking about joining the 2007-2008 Founding Donors and pledge to the Woods Charter School Foundation. The Foundation was established in 2007 to provide funding and other means of support to enhance the mission of Woods Charter School.
The Capital Campaign is a huge success, raising 21% of its goal in the first year. The Capital Campaign will continue to fundraise for, but not limited to, the following four areas:
media center / library
science
technology and math
performing and visual arts
Supporting Woods Charter School means supporting a successful learning model that has worked for ten years and is poised for expansion. Woods Charter School is well on its way to becoming a stellar educational establishment and a point of pride for Chatham County. The success of Woods Charter School is proof that a new kind of school can serve as an alternative to traditional public and private educational models.
Supporting Woods Charter School means supporting education that works on many levels-for students, for parents, and for the future of the community.
How much should we donate?
This is a common question from Woods' families. Woods Charter School Foundation is grateful for all contributions.
The Woods community pledged a total of $331,000 to the 07-08 Capital Campaign. If the Foundation receives $4,800 for every student or $6,000 from every family, we would reach our goal.
Monthly contributions are one way for families to donate. $100 per month for 4 or 5 years covers the above suggested amounts. Please remember to ask your employer if they provide matching funds - it's an easy way to grow your donation!
The Woods community has worked tirelessly and donated generously to get Woods Charter School into a purpose built facility. You are invited to join the existing Woods community by pledging to the Capital Campaign.
Room naming opportunities are available. If interested, please see the temporary signage in our lobby, great room, administrative area, trophy case, and a room in the High School area which are already named.
Again, the Foundation is grateful for all contributions.
For more information, please contact Nicolle Stewart at 919 960 8353 ext. 405 or nstewart@woodscharter.org

presented by
Susan Sipal, Author and Editor
Have you considered writing a book or memoir but just don't know where to start? Or perhaps you've already finished a manuscript but need some professional advice on how to edit it and make it more publishable. These two workshops will assist those interested in or already pursuing, writing commercial fiction with a comprehensive, detailed guide of how to get started or improve what you've already written. While high school-aged students through adults will be best suited to these workshops, a strongly interested 7th or 8th grader will probably do fine.

Help for Benefit Concert at Cat's Cradle
There's more that you can do to support the Woods Charter School Foundation other than coming out to the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro on Saturday, March 14th for a fun-filled evening full of wonderful music!
You can show our 3 generous bands exactly what "The Woods Way" is! Since these bands are donating their time for this benefit, the very least our community can do is feed them dinner that night before they perform.
Let's show Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Lynn Blakey, Ecki Heins, and all the members of Great Big Gone what Woods is really about...... coming together to support and help one another.
Buy tickets to join your community at Cat's Cradle; a smoke-free, family friendly venue! Tickets are $10 and will be sold in advance at Woods, at Cat's Cradle, or at the door. Kids under 12 are admitted free! Buy some for your friends!
If you're willing to help sell tickets before or after school, or would like to donate food to feed the hard working bands on the evening of the concert, please contact Carmen Laethem (wcs.foundation@gmail.com).
